On the Apples front, more specifically, Malus Domestica – better-known to you and me as the Bramley. It is a favourite of our Exec Chef, Martin Hollis, and he has been waxing lyrical in a new ‘Chef’s Table’ feature in The Courier . Martin told readers of the paper all about his passion for local, seasonal produce – including news on a unique community group just 20 miles from the hotel – Newburgh Orchard Group, or NOG for short!
NOG looks after, preserves and develops Newburgh’s heritage as a fruit-growing area with orchards that date back to 12th century. Martin has a series of apple-inspired recipes that you can download, including an absolutely scrumptious Bramley Apple Brûlée plus Apple Tarte Tatin, Apple & Frangipane Cream Pizza, Apple Mousse and Apple & Ginger Chutney.
This Saturday (7th September) is the start of Scotland’s Food & Drink Fortnight and Martin is back at theFife Farmers Market in St Andrews, working with whatever seasonal ingredients catch his eye for his cookery and tasting demonstration. The demos run from 10am-12pm on Saturday. If you are in the neighbourhood, do come along – but remember it is the Air Show at RAF Leuchars, so plan your journey to avoid the traffic!
From the Big Apple to a Big Golf Challenge. No, not the Alfred Dunhill Championship (26-29 September). Much more of that in the coming days and weeks. This BIG challenge is on our very own Championship Course, The Duke’s. Some of the very best amateur golfers from Fife will be heading to The Duke’s in October when the club hosts the Black Tees Tournament. Duke’s manager, David Scott, explains: “For those with a handicap of 3 or better, the Duke’s is hosting a one round event on Saturday 5th October from our Championship Tees. It is a fabulous test of golf, and we know that low handicappers love the challenge presented by the course.” More on the Black Tees event is available here.
David and the team at The Duke’s are still glowing from two recent accolades. The first is a Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor, awarded to businesses that rank in the top 10% worldwide for traveller feedback. The second is recognition from one of the world’s leading golfing magazines, Golf Week. The magazine has published its latest Best Modern Courses of GB & Ireland listing – and places our Duke’s at 29th in the whole of the UK and Ireland. Hats off to all for their hard work.
Finally, colleagues at the resort are running in the Great North Run on Sunday 15th September for a variety of charities. They have been training hard and are now on final countdown to the half-marathon challenge. If you are able to offer them your support, please do so via our official donation page.
Next Time: we welcome the students back to St Andrews, we’ll share Martin’s September Farmers’ Market recipes and we look ahead to the Alfred Dunhill Championship at the end of the month.
